AMRITA SHERGIL

Amrita Shergil (1913-1941) was one of India's first modernist painters. She was educated in Florence and Paris and developed a style that combined the best elements of European academic painting, the experiments of Gauguin and the figuration of the Pahari miniature schools. She came to India in 1934 and painted prolifically till 1941. Her famous paintings are Bride's Toilet, Hill Women, Siesta, Nudes, Brahmacharis, South Indian Villagers Goint to Market and Banana Sellers. She was the first and the youngest Asian to be elected Associate of Grand Salon for her painting Conversation (1934). Although her career was circumscribed by her sudden death, she had built an unassailable reputation for herself as an artist.
