Bibhutibhushan Banerjee (1899-1950) had been writing short stories since 1922 but he became prominent only after the publication of his first novel Pather Panchali (1929) in the magazine Vichitra. This masterpiece of Banerjee and its sequel Aparajita (1932), based on the author's own life-story, are written with a rare sincerity and fullness of the heart that keeps the readers engrossed. Banerjee's other novels include Dristipradeep (1935), Aaranyak (1949), Adarsa Hindu Hotel (1940), Bipiner Samsar (1941), Devayan (1944) and Icchamati (1949). Some of the best stories written by Banerjee include Umarani (1922) and Pui-mancha (1925). Banerjee's short stories are collected in more than a dozen volumes including Meghmallar (1931), Mauriphul (1932) and Jatra Badal (1934). Banerjee's Aaranyak reflects his love of nature.
