Born on Oct 9, 1877, Gopabandhu Das was a public spirited Gandhian of Utkal who championed the cause of the statehood of Orissa. He was conferred with the title 'Utkalmani', meaning the jewel of Orissa. He had launched the Kartavya Padhini Samiti (duty awakening society) for securing the Oriyas their rights and priviledges. He edited 'Asha', a newspaper from Berhampore and later launched his own weekly �Samaj� from Puri in 1919. A prolific writer in English and Oriya, Gopabandhu had a unique style of presentation of his ideas. 'Leisure time Thoughts', 'Autobiography of a Prisoner', 'Importance of Cow', 'Story of Nachiketas' and 'Dharmapada' are some of his works in English.
