Jamini Roy (1887-1972) was a very renowned Indian painter, who was greatly impressed by the Kalighat paintings and the works of the village patuas and tried to model his work on folk art of Bengal. He adopted the angular forms and harsh lines of the village patuas and used the village dyes in his paintings. He used cloth, wood and other material in place of the canvas. He is the recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award (1955).
