On 24th March 1931 she took the name of St Therese Martin but changed the spelling of the name to Teresa. Set up Nirmal Hriday (Home for the Dying) at Kalighat, Calcutta in August 1952. Winner of Padma Shri (1962), Magsaysay Award (1962), Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971), Good Samaritan Award (September 1971), Joseph Kennedy Jr Foundation Award (October 1971), Templeton Foundation Prize (January 1972) and Nobel Peace Prize (1979).
