Dr Mangalampalli Balamurali Krishna (born July 6, 1930) is a renowned Carnatic vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, playback singer, poet and music composer, who is respected for his knowledge of Carnatic Music. Dr Balamurali Krishna has reigned at the forefront of South Indian music for the past five decades. His powerful voice is magnetic and vibrant in all three octaves and his musical and artistic talents are legendary. He made innovations in the tala system. He incorporated "Gathi Bedam" in the "Sa Sabdha Kriya" part of the existing Tala chain, thus throwing open a new chain of Tala System. He has enriched the world of South Indian music with the creation of many new ragas and with nearly four hundred classical compositions. Dr. Balamurali Krishna has recreated the traditional style in his own neo classical style, which has well received by his audience.

He has also been a highly acclaimed music director for films and radio, an actor, and an instrumentalist who plays violin, viola, kanjira, veena and mridangam. He is an enterprising instrumentalist who plays Violin, Khanjira, Veena and Mridangam.

He is the recipient of several awards which include Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri (1971), the Best Play Back Singer (23rd National Film Festival, 1976), Best Music Director (34th National Film Festival, 1987), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, 'Sangeetha Kalanidhi' and the UNESCO Mahatma Gandhi Silver Medal (1995). He was chosen as the 'Wisdom Man of the Year in 1992'. He was also awarded the "Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres" by the French government. The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh honoured him with the `Atma Gauravam` award in 1997. The city of Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, India, has named a road after this legendry artist.
