Waman Bendre

Renowned poet and critic Dr Waman Bendre has many published poem collections to his credit of which Modalu Todalu, Ananth Dhare and Spandana are well known. His famous play is Sparsha. Waman also has to his credit the translation of Jnanapith Awardee Masti Venkatesh Iyengar's novel, Subbanna into Marathi, Chintamani Triambak Rao Khanolkar's Marathi play Kalaya Thasmai Namaha into Kannada and D.V. Patwardhan's Bharatiya Sahitya Sankalanfrom Marathi to Kannada. He has contributed 20 articles on Kannada writers for the Marathi encyclopaedia. Waman's other works are Bendre Jeevana Parichaya, Bendre Sankhya Vijnana Siddhanta and other major critical works on his father D.R. Bendre's writings. Among his edited collection of poems are: Samarasave Jeevana, Olave Namma Baduku, Nalina Kanasu and Ambikatanaya Hada Beladingala Noda. Waman has been declared awardee for the Central Sahitya Academy Award-1999 for his Kannada translation of Bhalchandra Nemade's Marathi novel Khosala. Waman Bendre is also the recipient of the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award (1982) for his translation of Dr Sarojini Babur's Marathi work Maharashtra Folk Literature into Kannada.
