National Film Awards of India

The National Film Awards are India's most prestigious awards for cinema. It began in 1954 and is managed by the Directorate of Film Festivals which was established in 1973.

The awards are given in several categories for Indian films made in Hindi and other regional languages. The 'Swarna Kamal' or the 'Golden Lotus Award' is given for the following categories: Best Film, Best Direction, Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Children's Film, while the 'Rajat Kamal' or the 'Silver Lotus Award' is given for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Music Direction and Best Lyrics among others.

57th National Film Awards (2009)

The 57th National Film Awards were presented by the President on October 23, 2010 to the best of Indian Cinema released during the year 2009.  The winners of the Awards are:

Best Actor award:  Amitabh Bachchan for his role in ‘Paa’

Best Actress award:  Ananya Chatterjee for her role in Abohomaan.

Best Camerawork: Anjali Shukla.

Best Sound Engineer: Oscar winner Resul Pookutty

Best Supporting role (Male): Farooq Sheikh for the film Lahore

Best Supporting role (Female): Arundhati Naag for the film Paa

Best Playback singer (Male): Rupam Islam

Best Playback singer (Female): Niranjana Sarkar (Housefull)

Best Music: Dev D

Best lyrics: Swananad Kirkirey for the film 3 Idiots

Best Music Director: Amit Trivedi for the film Dev D

Best Child Film : Ottani Pati and Kesu

Best Child actor: Jiva and Anba Karasu

Best Music score: Illyaraza for Pazhassi Raja

Best Choreography: K Shivashankar for film Magadhira



The Dadasaheb Phalke award, instituted in 1969, is the highest national honour for cinema given by the Government of India. The award is named after the veteran film actor Dada Saheb Phalke, who is considered as the 'Father of the Indian Cinema'. It is presented every year to senior film personalities for their contribution to the art. The award carries a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh and a ''Swarna Kamal".

The first Dada Saheb Phalke Award was given to Devika Rani in 1969. The other recipients of the Award include B.N.Sircar (1970), Prithviraj Kapoor (1971-posthumous), Punkaj Mullik (1972), Sulochana (Ruby Meyers) -1973, B. N. Reddy (1974),Dhiren Ganguly (1975), Kanan Devi (1976), Nitin Bose (1977), R.C.Boral (1978), Sohrab Modi (1979), P.Jairaj (1980),Naushad Ali (1981), L.V. Prasad (1982), Durga Khote (1983), Satyajit Ray (1984), V.Shantaram (1985), B.Nagi Reddy (1986), Raj Kapoor (1987), Ashok Kumar (1988),Lata Mangeshkar (1989), A.Nageshwara Rao (1990), Bhalji Pendarkar (1991),Bhupen Hazarika (1992),Majrooh Sultanpuri (1993), Dilip Kumar (1994),  Dr Raj Kumar (1995), Shivaji Ganeshan (1996), Pradeep (1997), B.R.Chopra (1998), Hrishikesh Mukherjee (1999), Asha Bhonsle (2000), Yash Chopra (2001), Dev Anand (2002), Mrinal Sen (2003), Adoor Gopalakrishnan (2004), Shyam Benegal (2005), Tapan Sinha (2006), Manna Dey (2007), V.K. Murthy (2008) and D.Ramanaidu (2009).


The first ever Filmfare Awards function was held on March 21, 1954. Bimal Roy's Do Bigha Zamin, was adjudged the Best Film of the Year. Meena Kumari received the Best Actress Award while Dilip Kumar was voted as the Best Actor of the Year. Music director Naushad won the Best Music Award for Baiju Bawra, while Bimal Roy received his second trophy for Best Director.
